Thinking Out Loud

1. We went into a mandatory Stay-Home-People! on March 18, under the order of the county public health head honcho. The next day, Governor Newsom decreed it for all of California.

2. Does shelter-in-place work?

3. California's population is nearly 40 million. The total of COVID-19 cases as of April 1, 2020, were 8,155 with 171 deaths. The count for our county was 23 confirmed cases, ten recoveries, hurrah! Alas, one death.

4. I'm glad we have pro-active leaders at the local and state levels.

5. A neighbor sneezed loudly and profusely in his backyard. Could his droplets make its way up and through our hallway window upstairs? I hope he's healthy.

6. While working in the front yard yesterday morning, I felt a very tiny drop fall on my face. It wasn't raining nor was it foggy. Hopefully that liquid was only morning dew.

7. I've been experimenting a lot in the kitchen. That's a good thing.

8. The other day I made flour tortillas, using smushed lentils and sesame seeds in place of shortening. Delicious! Thanks much to good friend Missus H for sharing her mom's recipe with me.

9. And then there was the day I made wonton chips. Easy peasy. I sprinkled garlic powder on wonton wrappers and baked them for a few minutes.

10. This morning I baked biscuits with olive oil and sour cream. The latter made the biscuits fluffy. The Husband was on his second one by the time I sat down for breakfast.

11. Once upon a time I listened to a professor lecture about the five rings of health. I recall physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. My brain blinked when he talked about the fifth ring. Was it umami?

12. Yesterday marked four years that Mama's Spirit soared into the Universe.

13. The shelter-in-place order has been extended to May 3, 2020.  Stay strong and healthy, Everyone!

I'm heading over to Thursday 13. Come join me.

  2. Glad you cooked up some fun. It is crazy times for sure and how many thought 2020 would be like this. It is very rare when the entire world is intimately involved. My mom passed 2 years ago and, maybe it’s bad of me, but I’m glad she is not here now to be part of this. I would be beside myself with worry.

    1. Hi Birgit, I've thought the same thing--glad that Mama isn't going through our current pandemonium. And, that's just him in the President office. Shudder.

  4. Hello, trying out new recipes sounds like a fun way to pass this time. I wish I had more ingredients in my pantry. We have been staying home for 3 weeks, just food shop trips and walks away from people. I am thankful for our local and state leaders. Take care, wishing you a happy weekend!

    1. Hi Eileen, I'm reaching deep into the cupboards now. What to do with quinoa and barley? :-)

  5. My next door neighbors are a couple of septuagenarians. I love old people and I almost asked them if they would like me to buy them groceries. Hope we all stay safe .

    1. They'd probably be delighted that you asked, even if they don't need help at the moment. I know I would. Take care, Hazel.

  7. I read something somewhere that said that at the end of this, everyone is either going to have become a gourmet cook or an alcoholic. Of course that doesn't take into account all that could cook before...

I hope the shelter in place works. Alas, those who were sick before (but weren't showing symptoms) make it seem like it isn't working.

    1. I do miss not having to cook, but I am having fun playing "Chopped" with myself. I can't lose, snort. :-)

  8. The virus can stay in the air for up to three hours, under ideal laboratory conditions, so unless you were downwind of your neighbour, I reckon you're OK..

The 'shelter in place' thing will work to reduce the death rate (hospitals aren't swamped with very sick people all at once) if everyone does it, sadly there are still ding-a-lings in every country who think it doesn't apply to them.

I love your cooking adventures. :)
