A Happy Packhorse

I’ve been the packhorse of the household these last few weeks. I’m not complaining, simply stating a fact. We’re temporarily carless, so we’ve been walking and taking the bus for errands, and because the husband’s shoulder is still on the mend, I’ve been the carrier of goods with my old workhorse of a purple daypack. Olé!

I got to wondering what are the attributes of a good packhorse, whether a human, donkey, snail, or other animal.

1) Not a wuss.

2) Stubborn.

3) Keep on keeping on.

4) Resolve.

5) Happy feet.

6) When there’s a will, there’s a way.

7) Determination.

8) Entertains oneself while chugging onward.

9) Mindfulness.

10) Positive.

11) Willingness.

12) Self-motivated.

13) Looking forward to the yummy carrot at the end of the trail.

It’s day 55 of my countdown. Being a packhorse right now is a good thing, as it helps me build up physical and mental strength and endurance. As for any pain, I can imagine flicking it away with my imaginary packhorse tail. It’s a long one, too. 🙃

It’s Thursday 13 time.

  1. They say that weight training is good for us as we age. Lugging all the stuff would qualify, I should think.

    1. Definitely. I’ve been hauling 1 to 2 buckets of grey water from the house to the yards every morning this year. Two birds kissed at the same time, watering plants and getting a bit of exercise.

  2. definitely identify with being the packhorse! and maybe that is why I have figured out various ways over time to entertain myself as I chug onward too :)

  3. We all have to chug along somehow! Good analogy. I could not lug groceries over a great distance. Besides, we're miles from a grocery store!

    1. I’m so thankful that the market is a walkable distance. Today when we reached the store, I didn’t feel the need to sit a spell before heading diwn the aisles. Yay!

  5. Su-sieeemac - I am catching up on posts after our trip to the UK.

Based on observing packhorses in the backcountry, "not easily distracted" seems to be an important characteristic. They can't be put off by bears or hikers or the grass along the trail! You have a terrific attitude about your situation!

    1. Hi, Angie! Thanks. My parents taught me well. They didn’t believe in crying over spilled milk. In my old age, I appreciate that. :-)
