13 Fruits I Like

Mama and Daddy were great believers in growing fruit trees, which, unfortunately, as a kid I didn’t like the taste of most fruit. They didn’t have much luck with the apple trees or the pear and peach trees bearing fruit. The cherry trees produced but Daddy eventually cut them down because the birds got to the fruit before us. Their persimmon and fig trees yielded tons of fruit that they gave away to friends and neighbors.

Today, I’m a big fruit eater. Still a picky one though. I prefer to buy organic fruit directly from the farmers. There’s definitely a difference in taste. These are my top 13 favorite fruits, not in any particular order.

  1. papaya
  2. mango
  3. pineapple
  4. avocado
  5. cherry
  6. strawberry
  7. blueberry
  8. tomato
  9. orange
  10. persimmon
  11. pear
  12. watermelon
  13. cantaloupe

  1. You actually eat persimmons? They grow wild here - the tree in the field near the house is loaded - but those things turn your mouth inside out in a heartbeat. I've only been lucky enough to get them when they are ripe a few times. But maybe there are different kinds of persimmons?

    1. Fuyu persimmons are crisp like apples and very yummy to eat, unlike the ones you have there. I must’ve eaten those first because I was in my 30s before I gave Fuyus a try. We had such a bumper crop last year that three branches full of persimmons broke.

  2. We pick apples every year from abandoned orchards. Good for months of apple crisp. Blueberries and cherries are on the top of my list.

    1. I love coming across an abandoned orchard. For a couple of years, we had a source for apricots.

  3. I love this list! I'm a big fan of strawberries (and bananas) and I always forget tomatoes are a fruit.

    1. Strawberries and bananas remind me of strawberry jello with embedded bananas from my childhood.

  4. I love cantaloupe. We had a plum tree in our backyard when I was growing up. Yup, the birds got quite a bit of that fruit.

    1. Birds and other creatures ate nearly all our apples this year. I noticed that they’ve almost cleared the persimmon branches and the fruit aren’t ripe. Poor guys, more of their ecosystems are being taken over by homes.
