Sunday Stealing: From Upstream Life

This week Sunday Stealing, hosted by Bev Sykes, has participants musing over questions taken from Upstream Life.

1. Name 5 people you admire and why.
• Daddy. Family was important for him. He took his responsibilities seriously. He made sure his children got the opportunities for a good life.
• Mama was resolute, stoical, full of love and cheeriness, but oh so sad. Also full of spirit, spit, and vinegar, Mama didn't let her misery keep her down. She had more than her share, including living through war and losing two children.
• The Husband. My gosh. I'm not an easy person to live with.
• Winifred, my mentor, my writing partner, my friend. She took a chance on me (#6). Winifred was an amazing, gifted, and giving person who taught me how to develop and create educational materials that respect and teach the learners.
• Kathy, a friend from grammar school days. I love her humor, her wit, her intelligence. For years, she went back and forth, several times a year to visit her parents, who lived over 400 miles away. As they got older, her visits were more frequent and longer.

2. When was the last time you did something adventurous?
Four years ago, I soared in a glider. The Husband and I gifted ourselves with glider rides for our anniversary. The glider was tiny, so we each got to have our own ride. The Husband flew to the west while I flitted to the east.

3. You felt you got older when?
I got dizzy upon getting off the playground merry-go-round. I was 25 or 26.

4. What one thing that could happen today would make you extremely happy?
That we own our house free and clear.

5. An experience you don’t want to go through again.
Closing up the estate of someone I love.

6. One decision you made that changed your life completely.
Applying for an assistant editor position at an educational publishing house even though I barely had the required minimal experience.

7. How do you participate in saving the earth?
Since a kid, I've reused, repurposed, and recycled stuff.

8. A gift you would like to get on your next birthday?
The Husband, Molly the Cat, and I are alive and well.

9. Things you miss about your childhood?
The essence of my childhood lives in me. I continue to have fun, to imagine, to wander, to wonder, to read, to learn, to play, to love, to be loved.

10. The greatest invention?     The pulley!

11. Your favorite super hero.   Wonder Woman

12. Your views about veganism.    None.

13. If you could be anything else in the world, what would you be?
I'm happy with who I am.

14. How did you parents meet?
In 1947, Daddy, then a U.S. citizen living in California, visited his family in the Philippines. One late afternoon, he went to fetch water from a well where he met Mama. When Daddy returned to his mother's house, he told his mother that he wanted to marry the girl next door.

15. Your morning routine.
After my morning ablutions, I head to the front or back yard to water plants, pull weeds, deadhead flowers, or whatever needs getting done. If Missy Girl has joined me, I feed her when I see her hanging out by the door as if to say, "Breakfast please." Back outside, I continue working until I hear the Husband grinding coffee. Then I eventually go in to make myself a peanut butter-jelly sandwich for breakfast. While I get settled at the table, deciding whether to read or play Sudoku, the Husband fetches me a cup of coffee. We pretty much hang at the table, reading, eating, and talking for 90 minutes or more.  Sometimes the pinky-nosed (wild) cat joins us.

    1. I loved it! The best thing about the ride was that it was in our backyard. I got to finally get high enough to see what is on top and the other side of the mountains I've seen most of my life.

  7. I hope you had fun in the glider. Four years is too long for something adventurous, though. Time to find something new to try ;)

    1. This was the second time I rode in a glider. It was wonderful and quiet! The first experience wasn't so great because the pilot and the Late Great First Husband talked the whole time.

  9. Always love these types of questions and I love your answers. I would say the Printing Press is the best invention because reading to hold for the masses then. I admire both my parents, warts and all because they gave me a steady home life. I admire James Stewart because he was a good man, brave and honourable in a town that is much less so. Yes to Wonder Woman and all she can do. As for one thing to make me happier.....no pain. I made a decision, years ago that radically changed my life and remember when I made that change..I was literally at the crossroads. I chose the path that many would be shocked at but it empowered me. You never know the path you take u til it is taken

    1. True words, Birgit. Taking that first step down any path is tough. And, if that path isn't what we thought, we can change that, too, in so many different ways. The printing press, yes! It's amazing it got made and it survived. Thanks for sharing, Birgit. Gentle hugs.
