Garden Art 2020

Zip, rip. Wrap. Zip, rip. Wrap.

"That looks like fun," said the Husband.

"Want to make one?"

See the yellow butterfly in the above photo mosaic. That's the Husband's creation.

I love it when the Husband plays artsy-crafty with me. Over the past few months, we transformed hangers and colored and patterned tape into four butterflies. The fourth butterfly was shy about getting its photo taken. We think it may be hiding near the back fence.

I thought it would be cool to hang butterflies around the backyard. I was done after making three. I still have a lot hangers. What to do with them? What to do?

A PLYWOOD BOARD
Who has made a desk by setting a solid piece of plywood (or door) over two file cabinets (or something like that)?

My canvas of a plywood board was once my desk top when the Husband and I lived in the big city area almost two decades ago. Pshew, wow. I wrote a whole bunch of good stuff on that desk. Before being my desk, the plywood board was the headboard the Late Great First Husband built for our mattress on the floor. So, I think that's the history of this board.

There's a possibility the piece of plywood board with all my history is sitting beneath the once-upon-a-time-coffee-table bench outside in the back. And, if it is, I'm sure the plywood board I used as a canvas has a colorful history, too. What story would you make up?

A TYPING TABLE
I inherited an old metal typing table with a side folding leaf from Mama. It's so cool. Vintage industrial grey. Someone had nailed or screwed a thick piece of plywood to the main table, which is now chipped and gauged. I wonder if that person hated the noise of typewriter clacking or vibrating against the table.

I never thought to ask Mama where she got the typing table.  She kept it outside behind the chicken coop she never used. It was near a huge, heavy-duty wrought iron trellis that she said a friend asked her to hold in case he moved back from the Philippines. I suspect the typing table may have been his, too.

Her friend never returned so Mama became a happy owner of the typing table, but not so happy about the trellis. Maybe she would've been happy if she could've moved it on her own.

It's been awhile since I've linked up to All Seasons, with Jesh, and Monday Mosaic, with Angela. So, here I go, please, come join me.

  2. Lots of fun garden art. My lupine and poppy seeds made it home to the float cabin in July. I didn't declare them at the border, but they didn't ask either. The agent was more concerned about taking our mandatory quarantine plan. We spent the required two weeks in complete isolation up at the float cabin, so that made it more tolerable. If you want to know how Canada has been able to control the virus spread, it's lots of testing and rules to follow. Of course, we have people who don't want to follow them, but more people seem to than when we were down in Washington State. - Margy

    1. Glad to hear that Canadians are more respectful of rules and each other. I don't understand people who stubbornly resist following simple and easy safety measures to prevent the covid19 spread. Do they really believe they and their loved ones are safe from death, or they can truly spring back from an infection? There's nothing courageous about their stance. Grrr.

  3. Su-sieemac - welcome back to Mosaic Monday! What a creative use for coat hangers; when I was working and had clothes to take to the dry cleaner, I always had TOO many hangers. That was one of the things to go when we retired! Lovely butterflies, and kudos to the husband for joining in. Our daughter is still using a desktop that she made to go over two file cabinets - it looks great! Enjoy the rest of your week, my friend!

    1. Thanks, Angie! Last October, we got to paint paper mache butterflies at a local theater. They were part of their Day of the Dead decor. That inspired me to make my own, but I didn't like the result. Wrapping duct tape around hangers is more my style. lol.

  8. Looks like you are very creative and artistic. I love when my husband joins me for a craft but his always turns out so much better than mine. LOL
Great stories about the wood and table.

    1. Thanks, Dawn. Once people know us, they can figure out whose done what. We definitely have different styles--the Husband is precise while I'm loosey goosey. All the better. :-)

  9. Do you follow Pam? She has all sorts of crafty things going on, too.

As for the hangers, have you thought about covering them to make them padded hangers? Those are useful. I have some my great grandmother crocheted over, and I use them for those things that could slip off the hangers easily.

    1. I follow an artsy-craftsy person by the name of Pam. Must be the same.
I inherited a whole bunch of crocheted hangers, too, from Mama. Those I've kept.

  10. Honestly I once worked in an office as part of a row of typists who all had an industrial gray typing table without the beautiful art top...when someone hit the *return carriage* all the tables in the row would jangle and jar. (That job didn’t last long.). (*ask an old person what a return carriage was.). ..... I love your garden art pieces, especially the memories they conjure. (Old memories and the new ones you two are creating with the butterflies .... and they *do* look like fun..)

    1. Jangle and jar, I remember that sound from typing class. Also the ding of the carriage return. I set up the Husband's typewriter in L Studio but there's so much stuff around it, I haven't played with it yet.
The plywood has been largest canvas yet. The back of the tin shed may be next. Whooo-hoooo! Thanks, Sallie. :-)

Your garden art is pretty, I love the butterflies, what a neat and creative way to use the hangers. The plywood board as a table top/typing table is great way to re-cycle. I love all the colors and fun art in your garden. Have a great day and happy week ahead.

  14. Door over two file cabinets makes a great desk. Had one long time ago. The painting and the butterflies are lovely. Wonderful artwork by the two of you.
