13 Jobs/Careers that Crossed My Mind

Earlier this month, I listed 13 of my more memorable jobs.  Today, it's a list of jobs (and, in most instances, careers) that interested me once upon a time, pretty much in this order, from teenage me to about 10-years-ago me.

1. High School English Teacher
2. Newspaper Reporter
3. Bookstore Owner
4. Street Vendor/Artist
5. Paralegal
6. California State Superintendent of Public Instruction
7. Heavy Equipment Operator
8. Gardening Service Co-Owner with Daddy
9. Mother of Five
10. Comedy Writer
11. Airport Shuttle Bus Driver
12. Background Investigator
13. Forensic Scientist

Check out other bloggers with lists of 13 for Thursday 13.

  1. What a variety, each one is so different. I love reading so a book store owner sounds great to me. You are an artist, so I would guess the street vendor/artist is a good choice. Take care, have a happy day!

    1. I still stop in front of an empty store and imagine my bookstore in there. :-)

    1. I think my favorite parts would be setting up the shop and buying books. I'd want a strong local books and local authors sections.

  3. I wanted to be a comedy writer too. And a singer/dancer on broadway. I thought about #4 and did it a couple times, and wanted to be a tour guide. What an interesting list Susie... now I want to make one too. LeeAnna

    1. I forgot about wanting to be a tour guide. In a way, when I wrote the blog about Hollister, I was being a tour guide. :-)

  4. I have been four of those. Being a superintendent of a public school system never crossed my mind, though! I certainly wouldn't want that job in this day and age. I also wanted to be an archeologist or a geologist at one point. Fortunately, I got over being enamored with rocks.

    1. Once upon a time I thought it would be fun to volunteer on an archeologist dig. If i could easily get up and down off the ground, I'd still consider it. lol
I'm thinking, Anita, that you were a reporter, a teacher, an artist, and a background investigator.

  5. That's a good list. You did some of them, too, didn't you? And hey, you could still run for superintendent ;)

    1. You got me thinking, Liz.
I taught a couple of literacy programs which, I suppose, could count as an English teacher. And, if working on the school and college paper, as well as writing articles for nonprofits, count as being a reporter, then I guess I was. I got out of journalism when I realized I could not bring myself to ask questions of people going through critical times.

  6. Who knows, you could've been all of them in parallel universes. :)

  7. I have been #3 and 4. As a young person I thought I would either join the Peace Corp or be a peddler. #3 was close to that.

    1. I was interested in joining the Peace Corp, too, even went as far as talking with a recruiter. What stopped me was not having any competent skills to offer, including teaching English.

  8. Being the State Superintendent of Public Instruction seems like a strange job to aspire to. It sound so political and far from the kids schools serve. What is your motivation? I was an assistant superintendent of Instruction for a small school district and even that was way to political for my taste. - Margy

    1. I dream big, Margy. :-) I thought about the State Supt. job when I was in my 20s, naive and alturistic (the same), in one of my activist periods and gungho about reforming education. I even daydreamed about being in that position. If I had gone down the public education path, I would've gone from teacher to either counseling or curriculum development. At the time of my big dreams, I had no idea about the game of politics.

  9. I like your list. Paralegal, Heavy Equipment Operator, Bookstore Owner, and Forensic scientist would be on my list too.

  10. Awesome list! I've done the English teacher and mom thing. Moving forward, working for a textbook publisher would be within reach for me, but not sure I want to do that anymore. Bookstore owner would be a DREAM as well as private investigator and newspaper reporter.. And for me, I would add event planner. Love your list!

    1. Being an event planner would be fun, but stressful. If I could, I'd open a bookstore. Once upon a time, I thought about having a ceramic studio in the back of the bookstore.

  11. I couldn’t make anywhere near the 13 real jobs as you did on your earlier post ... I could come closer to the magic number on this one as I’ve always been better at thinking about work than doing it )).I’m reading this just before heading for bed, maybe I will fall asleep counting jobs instead of sheep )).
