Digging It

I've been digging. Here a little dig. There a big dig. All over the yard, both front and back.

The last several days I've focused on finding shady spots for potted succulents in the backyard. Those parched guys looked so happy and relaxed after a few hours in the shade absorbing a long drink of water.  I've also been digging beds for the extra bean, tomato, and pepper seedlings that sprouted. I can't bring myself to throw them out.  They deserve a chance to produce fruit, too.

The Husband built a trellis for the beans to climb. Pretty cool, huh. Mama would've given him a giggle, grin, and an extra nod of well done.

This morning I dug the biggest bed for the tomato and pepper seedlings. Double dig, work in soil amendment, turn soil one more time, and let rest for tomorrow's planting. Daddy would've been proud, by golly, by gee that I paid attention to how he prepared the land for his vegetable garden. That's a story for another day.

Digging, shovels, irrigation pipes, fields of growing vegetables. I saw that firsthand between the ages of five and 10, more or less, when I hung out with Daddy. He was hired by local farmers to irrigate their fields. It was just Daddy and me, all day, from before the sun rose and sometimes to right after it set. I loved those times. Yes, another story or two for another day.

I dig that Molly is usually nearby while I dig.

So there you go. That's what I've been playing at lately. Digging in the yard.

    1. I just remembered I need to buy cheap beer to trap the critters that are chomping on the beans.

  2. Su-sieemac - how blessed you are to have the company of Molly and your hubby in the garden. (And you know that your Mama and Daddy are never far from you …) I dig this post and I dig you joining up to Mosaic Monday!

  3. Sweet memories of both of your parents, who had the innovative and determined spirit of the last generation we need today! They would be proud of your plantings, Susie, and of seeing new opportunities! It just occurred to me now, that I haven't "seen" you much between March and now. Many thanks for linking up to All Seasons! Still like to know though how you fared during that time.? Or was it too depressing? In that case, hope things are going better for you now, but I'm missing that crazy spunk I am used to of you. To a bright future, Jesh

    1. Hi, Jesh. Yes, I think my parents would be proud. They'd also be shocked that I'm actually enjoying it.. :-) All's been well with us. I haven't been into writing the past few months, thus the sporadic posts and infrequent visits. Thanks for asking.

    1. Digging lets my mind wander and think. I like ironing for the same reason.

    1. Molly cracks me up with her rolling. This way, then that. And, when she's done for the day of rolling in dirt, she plops on my feet for me to pluck out bits of dried leaves and grass.

  7. ...I've been digging too, but it's so dry that the ground is like concrete. I look for sunny spots!.

    1. It's the same here, too. Bone dry. I have to chip away at the surface first.

  8. Molly looks pretty relaxed, digging doesn't seem to bother her. I bought myself a small geranium to watch grow on the condo porch. I can see it from my sofa seat. We are going out more often to visit parks to sit in the sun and walk. Wish we had a nice yard like yours. - Margy
