Thoughts While Cracking Walnuts

1. What words convey the sounds of walnut shells ricochetting?

2. Crack. Obviously.

3. Zing. A shell flies into the air.

4. Zingg. A shell soars far.

5. Ping. A shell ricochets on something.

6. Thump. A shell hits something.

7. Tinkkk. A shell vibrates on a surface.

8. Crack. Thump. The shell hit a chair.

9. Crack. Zing. Ping. Tinkkk.  The shell ricocheted off the glass tabletop onto the floor.

10. Crack. Ping. Zingg. Thump. Tinkkk. The shell bounced off a chair and hit the wall.

11. Too bad we didn't have goggles. Across the table, the Husband shielded his eyes while he read on his iPad.

12. Could anyone intentionally hit someone with a walnut shell?

13. "A blue ribbon walnut cracker," said the Husband.

  1. The perfect post to describe onomatopoeia to a class. (About a week before they closed the schools, I covered an English class where we were discussing literary devices.)

Yes, I think you could deliberately hit someone with a walnut shell, but it would take practice.

    1. I like saying that word, onomatopoeia. That must’ve been a fun class. I would’ve had fun for sure.

  2. Great sounds, bring back memories of my grandmother she had 3 English walnut trees. She would pick up each walnut, dry them on frames and then crack them and give me gallon size ziploc bags full of nutmeats.

  5. The trick to deliberately hitting someone is to get them close enough do you can't avoid them. :)

    1. Then I'll stick to swinging a bat for my weapon of choice. If needed.

  7. Su-sieeemac - this brought back memories of Christmas past, when Santa would leave a bowl of walnuts under the tree. My Dad would use a nutcracker just like the one in your picture to crack them. So delicious.

    1. There's a farm stand in town that still has a lot of walnuts in their shell for sale. Thank goodness. :-)

  8. Ha! I would certainly not mind listening to those noises nor dodging errant shell pieces if I could eat some of the insides... .... Neighbors across the street in our Oregon home (the former life one) had a huge black walnut tree in their front yard that they never took care of ... .. The nuts all seemed to fall at once and the street would be littered — they sounded like gunshots when cars ran over them. I was surprised every year. (I think those black walnuts are inedible. I’ll ask our SIL why .... they have that beautiful tree. In their backyard.).

    1. We live on a former walnut orchard. I wish Mama had kept at least one of the two walnut trees that were on the property when she moved in. A neighbor convinced her to pull down the trees because they make a lot of mess. Every so often I see walnut shells around the yards, thanks to the squirrels. I wonder if they could also be dropped by the crows.

  11. I think if you could intentionally hit someone with a nut shell of any kind we would have figured that out in a house full of cousins. You can, however, use marbles to cause serious damage to your cousin and the upstairs (i.e. good) TV.
One of my favorite smells is when you step or roll over black walnuts in the fall.
What are you making with all those walnuts, Susie?

    1. Ouch, ouch, ouch. I'm imagining the mighty sting of marbles. Ouch! The photo is not a recent one, but I think I cracked the same amount this time around. The walnuts are for snacking, adding to smoothies, and topping cereal and ice cream. My favorite mish-mash right now is a dish of ice cream topped with Kahlua, walnuts, and banana chips. Yumm.

  12. I love walnuts. They are also good against cholesterol. I Italian the cracking noise would be: "crac!" (Krak!) ;)
