Enjoying a Moment


Tried and True? Or, an experiment?

That's what I asked the Husband, who took himself out of the science fiction story he was reading for the nearly-one-too-many time, within probably 15 minutes.

I am a fortunate woman because the Husband didn't ignore me, nor grunted, then ignored me or snarlingly said, "What."

The Husband, instead, looked up from his book and asked, "I don't know what you're talking about. What are you referring to?" ("Now" is what I added in my head.)

"What do you think?" I asked. "Should I make the olive cheese balls the usual way or try something different?"


He pondered and considered (I love that) before having a level-headed discussion with a whirly-minded woman as myself. We agreed the only constant (kinda) was the cheesy-buttery dough because the types of olives and cheese rarely were the same combination as the first time I made the recipe.

I could refer to the recipe, but I don't have the original recipe and I can't recall how I modified it a bit.

Our conclusion: Almost, if not all, my cooking is experimental.

Is that the same as thinking outside of the box?

By the way, here's my first experiment with watercolors.

    1. Until my experiment, I thought I had to be prim and proper when painting with water colors. That concept has gone out the window. :-)

  2. I'm reminded of the difference between baking and cooking. With baking, you need to be precise so the finished product comes out the way you want it. With cooking, it's more a little of this/a little of that. Doesn't taste right? Add something else.

    1. I pretty much bake the same way I cook. One of these days, I'll write about the Birthday Cake I made for a co-worker once upon a time.

    1. Thanks, Eileen! I didn't like my recipe experiment at all. I added sunflower butter which made it too heavy.

  5. Your watercolor experiment turned out wild and wacky - I'm surprised you had never done it up till now! Hope you give us in the coming weeks some snippets of the trip you took:)
    Oh Susie, you are tempting us at All Seasons with Olive Cheese balls without giving us the recipe! (I've never tasted them, so I'm curious and wanting to make it!) So at another opportune time, please have a pen and paper ready on the kitchen counter, and jot it down as you make it, pleeeease?
    Have an awesome week - not too hot would be nice! (In Sacramento it became yesterday 97 degr. at some points!)

  8. That's a fun watercolor, I like the orange and aqua. I don't know if I could make anything the same but I bet whatever you make is yummy. Now I'm hungry for cheese and olives.

    1. I don't know if I'll ever get out of freestyle painting. I like the emotions of water colors, always reminds me of that song "Sakura". The modification on the olive recipe gave me the burps. Don't use sunflower butter is my lesson learned.

    1. You've got a point, Birgit. I don't change my lumpia recipe by much. I didn't like my modification on the cheesy balls (addition of sunflower butter made the result too heavy) but I did figure how not to have the cheesy olive balls spread out during baking.
