For the past 12 summers, a summer isn't summer without sunflowers growing somewhere in the front, back, or side of the house. I sowed the first sunflower seeds, and until this year, the Mama sowed seeds from the previous year's harvest.
I tossed the seeds about the backyard too late, meaning after the last of the rain. And, me watering sporadically and forgetting where I had tossed the seeds, not a sunflower was to be seen.
Then. Last week, I saw that spindly sunflower smiling at me as I was watering flowers.
I'll do better next year.

Or maybe some of the seeds will sprout next season! Have a beautiful week!
ReplyDeleteI hope so. I used up all of the sunflower seeds that the late Mama saved. I do plan on purchasing seeds.
DeleteBetter luck next time! I have to saw the sunflowers individually in pots to succed.
ReplyDeleteNice photo!
Thank you.
DeleteOne is better than none!
ReplyDeleteThat's what I thought, too. :-)
DeleteI agree with Jill...one is definitely better than none! Enjoy your last week in July.
ReplyDeleteThanks. You, too.
DeleteThat is certainly a sunflower with character. I think it might have something in common with Mariah in Anne of Green Gables - a bit crusty but lovely nonetheless!
ReplyDeleteI like that, Pondside. She's now called Marilla. I hope she has some seeds for me to save for next year.
DeleteThe tenacity of the sunflower reminds me of what you have written about your mama:):)
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for sharing this with SEASONS! Are you getting back to your previous routine? Or not yet? Anyways have a beautiful week, friend!
Marilla the Sunflower reminded me of the Mama, too. :-) I'm not there yet with routines, but I am writing more which is good. Hope yours is beautiful, too.
DeleteOne is better than none!
ReplyDeleteTotally!
DeleteBetter a scruffy sunflower than none at all. :)
ReplyDeleteYup. It describes me at the moment. :-)
DeleteCongratulations! Stay safe from the fires
ReplyDeleteWe're physically far away from the one near Big Sur. But its smoke has reached us.
DeleteI like your sunflower, and sometimes less is more.
ReplyDelete:-)
DeleteI can feel how you miss her the way you mention her in your post. I miss her too and she is not even related to me.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Carin, for the kind words.
DeleteThat is one interesting sunflower. I thought it was a new "species" -- ha ha! It's still a beautiful flower
ReplyDeleteI love the sunflowers and I look forward to seeing them every summer. Great shot.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your day and the week ahead!
That ONE should produce seeds for you and then you can plant them next year.
ReplyDeleteThe Mama is saying, with this flower, I am here, never fear, flowers will always appear.
