My Alphabe Thursday theme -- The Dude, The Husband |
The Husband is the reason that he and I, the Mama, and Molly the Cat are living together today.
About 12 years ago, it became very clear to me that the Mama's health was failing. Her nutrition was poor. Her body was tiring out. Worse of all, living alone, she was lonely. The Mama moving into a nursing home or a residential care facility was out of the question. She had a horrible time living in a skilled nursing facility for six weeks after she broke her hip. A permanent move to a residential care facility would've killed her spirit, straight and simple.
At the time, the Husband and I lived about a two-and-a-half hour drive away in an urban environment. City living was not for the Mama. We were tiring of the mayhem, so we were open to moving to the rural area where I was born and raised. The tough question was this: Could the Mama and us live in the same house? The Mama is a unique character who can be difficult to live with, as are the Husband and me.
But, here we are, nearly 12 years later— the eccentric, the hermit, the free spirit, and the pussy cat—still going strong, making a go at living together, sometimes contentiously, but mostly harmoniously.
The Husband is a very thoughtful human being. He could have said "No!"
It's Alphabe Thursday, hosted by the sweet Jenny Matlock. Today is the letter T. To check other participants, please click here. By the way, if you're coming from the Blogging from A to Z April Challenge, my B post is over here.
Your husband is a gem but I think you both have such a wonderful relationship that you mesh well together. I am glad everything worked out so beautifully for all of you. Blessings are everywhere, sometime we do not notice them at first. Happy weekend and I wish you a blessed Easter too.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Anne. Happy Easter to you, too.
DeleteYes , thoughtful husband and love how you describe the process and the present living situation ~ 'the eccentric, the hermit, the free spirit and the pussy cat'! You are blessed!
ReplyDeleteHappy weekend coming to you,
artmusedog and carol
Thank you, Carol. It's always good to be reminded how fortunate we are. :-)
DeleteI'm sure that each of you contributes to the family relationship.... how wonderful to be able to have your mother with you (and you with her).
ReplyDeleteYears ago, I would've said, "No way!" if a fortune teller told me I would be living with the Mama again. All in all, I'm glad we are all together.
DeleteWhat a blessing to be able to care for your mother with such support and love.
ReplyDeleteThank you. She cares for us as well. :-)
DeleteIt takes a special man to do this. My hubby is another since my mom lived with me (she had her own Apt but still tight quarters) and, when my mom got dementia he cared for her when I was at work. How wonderful they are. Your mama would not have been good in any long term care-she needs the garden and to feel useful-you are both great children
ReplyDeleteThank you, Birgit. We are fortunate to have met and married wonderful guys. We aren't saints though. There are moments when one of us gets on someone's nerves in the worse ways. But, that's life and living.
Deleteisn't that the truth. I now say to my hubby "If I agree with you then we'd both be wrong"
DeleteT'was love. :)
ReplyDeleteMust be.
DeleteSusieee thank you for welcoming me and my brother into your warm home, reading your post today I feel honored and lucky
ReplyDeleteAs were we, Lisa, when you and your brother visited us. :-)
DeleteYour mother is blessed by having you and your husband.
ReplyDeleteAnd one some days, cursed. LOL!
DeleteYou're all full of love. What a wonderful story!
ReplyDeleteThank you. :-)
DeleteHappy Easter...love hearing that you worked it all out. So far we've been fortunate to live near enough to keep our aging parents independent- but we did set up a video feed over the harsh winter, so we could make sure everything was okay.
ReplyDeleteThe Mama is amazing. I have to really stay on my toes to be at least one step ahead of her. The other day we came home to find her standing high on the ladder pruning the neighbor's lemon branches that were barely hanging way high over the fence. She seems to energize spiritually after such a caper.
DeleteI can almost see her chortling with glee!
DeleteIt is good when you have room and all can stand each other. We lost our pets, our parents, and our kids moved away. Just Mrs. Jim and me now. Mrs. Jim fell in September last year and broke her hip. She had to have a hip transplant.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, I miss my dogs.
Thank you for peeking in on me and leaving your nice comment. I love reading about your hubby.
..
Hi, Jim,
DeleteAm I ever late responding. Sorry. I hope your Mrs. Jim is liking her new hip and getting around well with it. A friend of mine had both her hips replaced last year and is so happy to be able to do a lot more physical things she couldn't do before.
It sounds like you all are trying to make living together a success!
ReplyDeleteSo far, so good. :-)
