K is for Kitty Won't Eat

"Maybe Molly needs a table," said the Mama, eying the barely touched breakfast plate of food on the floor.

"She wouldn't be able to reach her food," I said, envisioning Molly the Cat sitting at a little kid's table.

"She has too bend so low to eat," Mama said. Molly the Cat circled her plate, sniffed it, and walked away.

Molly had to have been hungry. She tried to climb on my calves (yeah, I have big calves) while I was spooning her food onto her plate, which was her sign of saying "Hurry up, Human!" I set the plate down. She took a few bites and walked away. She'd been doing that for a couple of days.

Maybe the Mama was onto something. I went into the hallway where a whole bunch of nothing rested and found a cardboard carton to hold take-out coffee. It was the perfect size for the plate to rest on. So, I tried it.

"Come here, Molly."

Molly approached her breakfast. She sniffed her makeshift table. She sat down and ate.

Hurrah!

Life was good with Molly the Cat and her table for about 10 days. Then she started her I-don't-want-to-eat routine again. On her second night, I picked up her nearly full plate from her table to toss away. Molly followed me. I put the plate down on the floor. "Last chance, Molly. You snooze, you loose."

Molly sniffed the plate and ate it all up.

I went over to get her table. A small piece of dried food was stuck on it. Ah ha! Her majesty would rather go hungry than eat off a dirty table. But, then, who would?

  1. An amusing post - that's just typical of a cat. I have one who changes her sleeping spot every few days and I've often found her in the most peculiar places. :)

    1. When Molly the Cat first came home with us, friends asked us where she slept. We said, "Anywhere she wanted."

  3. My sister actually puts Irina's bowl of food on the top of an old planter so she can reach it better. That way she does not have to crouch down to eat her food. What seems to work for me is I do not put my cats on a feeding schedule. I keep at a bowl of dry food for Irina at all times, and change it out if it gets stale before she finishes it. Irina has never got fat, and this is what we did with our cats growing up. I do give her wet food in small portions, but that is the only thing I dole out on a feeding schedule.

    1. The planter is a good idea. I'll try that. Molly gets a bowl of dry food, but she only eats it late at night when she's famished. Right now the only kind of food she likes is Rad Cat, chicken only. She and the Mama are both picky eaters.

  4. That's cats for you. I blogged about the royal attitude of cats earlier in the challenge. http://dacairns.blogspot.com.au/2015/04/cats-are-cute.html I'm obviously a dog person. I do enjoy reading about the antics of cats though. Thanks for sharing.

  6. Oh the wonder of fussy pussy cats:) My hubby speaks cat. He knows when one needs to have the food more at their level or when the cat dish may be a bit too deep and it bothers their whiskers so they need a flatter dish. We won't even get into what each one wants for food

    1. I never thought about the whiskers. We moved Molly from a small bowl to a plate because the Mama said her head is to big for the bowl. lol

  7. Fastidious kitty--I loved this. You wrote it so well that I could picture it perfectly. My son was a bit like this when he was little. He used to hate getting hs hands sticky while eating and used to hold them out like a little prince for me to wipe them clean with a damp cloth.

    1. Cute! The Husband told me this story about when he was a tiny kid, someone had to smash his peas for him or he wouldn't eat them. Kids and cats are just cute.

  9. She has standards! ... seriously though, sometimes going off their food is a sign cats are not feeling well ... is all OK with her otherwise?

    1. She lost a tooth the other day and has been drooling a lot more than usual. We're checking out vets right now and will take her in for a visit very soon. Last night she knew something was up because she put on a show for us -- running here and there -- to let us know that she's fine and no doctor for her. She's so like the Mama.

  10. Our cat loves tuna fish water from the can but won't eat the bits of tuna fish in the water. She likes licking things but often won't eat them. This includes bits of meat or fish. If it's liquid, she drinks it up!

    1. Yesterday, I let her lick cheese sauce off a spoon. She liked that. Maybe she'd like tuna fish water. I know she doesn't care for tuna fish. Too fishy for her, I suppose. She doesn't like the smell or taste of strong fish.
