K is for Knucklehead Acts

This is the season to be jolly. Ho! Ho! Ho!

No doubt the Republicans in Congress are happy. They got the tax breaks for the poor rich for another two years. And, then they turned around and blocked passage of a bill that would give a one-time amount of $250 in 2011 to the elderly and disabled receiving social security benefits. Because consumer prices have not climbed high enough, social security recipients do not warrant a cost-of-living increase for another year.

Heaven help those whose only income is a social security check, and may their monthly benefits be more than the average $1,153. That was the amount in October, 2010, according to the Social Security Administration Web site

I just don't get it. Unless, perhaps, just maybe, the Republicans figured they helped the common people already by agreeing to an extension of unemployment benefits.

Sigh.

With all the knuckleheadedness that's going on in Congress, I still am optimistic about humanity. The trick for me is not to be complacent. So, onward and upward.

Even after writing a downer post, I have a Christmas song for today.  Please check out "Oh Come, Oh Come Emmanuel," performed by Randy Granger on the Native American flute.

One last note: I am participating in Alphabe-Thursday, hosted by Jenny Matlock. For more interpretations of the letter K, please click here.

  1. Beautiful, beautiful song!

For the elderly and the disable, the cost of living is always higher than the benefit they receive, but those who voted to block the bill probably thinking they can pocket it for themselves.

  2. I don't understand the choice either. Love the song.

  3. That song is hauntingly beautiful!
My favorite picture is of the snow-encrusted pines - gorgeous!!

& you're right, despite all the inconsistencies in politics one must remain optimistic in humanity!

  4. I think it's everywhere the same.

  5. I think it's 6 of one or half a dozen of the other, depending on the way you look at it. They are thinking the wealthy own the businesses and this will provide jobs or keep people working. According to this morning, it isn't a "done-deal" yet.

The flute was nice and Native Americansy. Reminded me of Nancy Pelosi on the news this AM... trying to get a bill passed of giving citizenship to aliens who graduated in US. She kept comparing it to our original settlers. Who??? The ones who stole the land from the Indians and still hold them hostage on little plots of land!!!! She forgot to mention that.
    Oh well, It's Christmas....
    Love ya... Manzi

  6. It's a beautiful song, one of my favorites for Christmas, and sounds interesting on a Native American flute. Kind of haunting.

  7. Mumsy, I need to do some homework. I'd like to find out how many social security recipients have only those benefits on which to live. I suspect it a majority more than a minority.

JDaniel4's Mom, I am so happy to hear last night that some Democrats do not accept the bill. Let's see how that plays out.

mle: "hauntingly beautiful" is perfect description. It also describes New Mexico where the artist is from.

Gattina: I hope though that complacency is not.

Manzi, I think the trickle-down theory is so lame. According to that philosophy, there should not be any lost jobs since Reagan's time. Of course, some would say that many jobs were created by American employers--in other countries.

Sue, my favorite part is "Rejoice! Rejoice!"

  9. And you are still positive, sadly I am sliding towards a grand negativity when it comes to today's society especially this week with students rioting in London like spoilt children. I open the papers and all I read is gloom. It scares me, it makes me stop and wondeer where are we going with all of this?
Nice to bring up a current topic into Jenny's Alphabe Thursday

  10. That song is beautiful.

I have always been somewhat anti-political in the past. My husband has been a bit shocked since I've become so loud in my opinions over the past several years.

At first I was disgusted...now much of the time I am enraged at the callous disregard for "regular" people in our society.

Thanks for a thought provoking post today. And for a hunting musical interlude as well. The song was lovely. The sentiments heart-felt!

    A+
