Starting the Year with Art

Bunnies dancing through fields of wildflowers towards the sea.

This week I’ve been participating in The Happy New Year Challenge, hosted by Artist Karen Abend, a free five-day event with prompts from Artist Gaia Marfurt. The drawings on this post are from days two, three, and four. You can see day one’s piece here

The challenge has been fun. And, self-revealing of sorts.

Hearts Born

While doing this challenge, I’ve learned that prompts tend to freeze me up rather than free me to create. That’s bothersome. Maybe my deeper self is reminded of art time in grammar school when I felt discouraged and timid to draw, paint, paste, and craft my creations because they didn’t look like the ones the teachers favored.

House and Fly flying high and loose in the cerebellum.

Another aspect of the challenge that reared up my young insecure self was sharing my work at the challenge’s Facebook page. I got one, two, once three, likes for my work while others got double digit and triple digit likes. Again, I’m back in grammar school days with big hopes that my art work would make the bulletin board. And, it doesn’t. What’s wrong with me, with my imagination? Absolutely nothing.  The silly things I have to unlearn. 🙃

Moral of the story: Let go. Create. Enjoy. Stop comparing to a standard that never was.

Today, I’m joining up with other artists at Art for Fun Friday. Good Cheer, One and All!

  1. And this is such fun art to start the year with. Happy 2023 to you!

  2. I'm with you on prompts. I don't do well with them either. But your art is lovely. The likes thing is a popularity contest. The double digits people are ones who have a lot of friends who just like everything they do.

    1. Thanks, Liz. I choked up on standardized tests too. I went 5 pages on the GRE exam before I found something I could answer.

  3. Su-sieee. Your art is fasinating. I ususlly gravitate towards hearts but i must day my favourite piece is the one with the bunnies. Reading the title of that one was like hsving a story narrated. Ad i read the title of it my eyes opened to the different areas in the painting.
Happy New Year and thank you for linking to Art For Fun Friday.

    1. Thanks, Gillena! The bunnies get me smiling and wondering what adventures they had.

  4. Love the dancing bunnies, they are so cute :-)

  5. Favorite is the sketch of the playful bunnies ~ Xo

Wishing you good health, laughter and love in your days,

    1. Thanks, Carol! Those bunnies have grown on me. Has me wondering what they like doing at the beach.

  6. Hey, there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with your art or your imagination. FB is tough and there are some not so nice people there. Those that are getting high likes have a huge following. Don't allow that and the numbers to discourage you. Join in with Rains TADD my Friday Face OFF Gillena's Friday art and Elizabeth's Tuesday T-Party You will find some truly wonderful people at all of these sites.

    1. DVArtist, I appreciate your encouragement and the links where I can share without having my insecurity peep out. ❤️
