H is for Hourly Parking

My theme for #23 Round of ABC Wednesday:
Signs & Such of San Benito County, California

In my hometown of Hollister, downtown parking is free for three hours, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.  It used to be two hours, but some people complained they couldn't get their business done within that time, and, no way were they going to park in the city garage where it's free all the time. That's too far of a hike.

Downtown Hollister is five blocks long. We are spoiled.

  1. Our free parking in Bellingham is just the opposite, after 5:00 or weekends and holidays. Guess the city wants to cash in on the busy times instead of encouraging people to shop downtown weekdays. No free parking structures for us at all. - Margy

    1. I am happy for the free 3 hours by the library. It was only 1 free hour for ages.

  2. Our town haven't had parking meters for years. I recall parking for a dime for year.

    1. I think there was a time when meters took pennies. Nickels for sure.

  3. I guess they don't go downtown just to walk? Because then the hike from the parking garage would be perfect.

    1. Not much downtown to do other eating, going to a spa, getting your hair done, and banking. After saying that, I ask myself why up the free from 2 to 3 hours when the City needs money.

  4. Free parking? That sounds like socialized asphalt.

In seriousness, downtowns all over need free and better parking. My city doesn't charge on weekends or nights. The better city to the west charges out the butt all the time.

  5. Our silly downtown only has free parking on the weekends and our downtown sucks. Yours looks pretty and now has 3 hours! This is great

  6. You are lucky, in Brussels you pay every little parking space ! And in Amsterdam it's even worse, when I visit my son i have to pay 2..00 $ per HOUR to park in front of his house ! Only 1 car is permitted per family ! and in the city center NO cars are allowed !

    1. I feel for you, Gattina. Having lived in San Francisco for many years, I understand the high parking fees for limited parking spaces. I'm glad I don't have to do that anymore.

  7. Parking in downtown Albany, NY is terrible. Metered parking, 25 cents for 12 minutes, minimum $1 charge. I take the bike and/or bus.

  8. What an interesting choice for ABC Wednesday - H.
Hourly parking varies so much from place to place. There is free parking in downtown Tupelo, the nearest city to us, but it is hard to find an empty spot! We usually have to park a few blocks away - but hey! walking is good exercise for those of us fortunate enough to be able. I do think more places should offer free handicapped parking spots.

  10. Our town is little enough to not have metered parking at all ... give 'em a decade or so though ... maybe not even that long the way it's growing.

    1. We don't have meters yet. Just the lovely meter maid. I think we need a lot more things happening downtown before the meters appear.
