The View from the Mama's Seat

The Mama had the best view of the outside world from her seat at the kitchen table.

She could watch the cars drive by, as well as people walk by, from the north or the south. She could see the butterflies kiss across the pink roses. She could gaze at the tiny brown birds take turns eating at the four-perched bird feeder. And, she could spy on the goings on of the neighbors.

"What is that man's name?" the Mama asked, waiting for lunch to be served.

"What man?" I asked, frantically getting lunch together, late as usual.

"The man in the grey house." (The house which is now blue.)

"Steve."

"He's cutting his lawn," she said.

"That's good."

"He's not wearing any shirt."

I never knew whether the Mama thought that was a good thing or not.

  2. The last two lines made me laugh. I remember my father-in-law telling me about meeting his ancient Scottish in-laws for the first time. His father-in-law to-be mowed the lawn in a shirt and tie. The old couple was shocked to see my husband's father mowing in a T-shirt.

    1. Hmmm, Me thinks I shall ask the Husband to put on a shirt and tie the next time he mows the lawn.

  3. Hello, great post and view. My hubby would not be caught mowing the lawn without a shirt. One reason is the bees are always attacking him. Happy weekend to you!

    1. That's a very good reason to keep a shirt on, Eileen!

  5. It might have depended upon the man's chest.

I have a landscaping service mow my lawn now. I'm always amazed at the long sleeve shirts they wear. It's so hot and humid here most of the time, but they're all covered up. I guess it's just to protect themselves from the sun.

    1. The Mama covered up, too, when she worked outside. The long sleeves actually keep you cool.

  6. Knowing moms...she did not like Steve without his shirt! They usually don't look like George Clooney or Cary Grant but more like John Goodman...hahahahaaa. My Opa used to love looking out the window and watch what was going on
