My First California Poppy

This is a close-up of the petals of the first California poppy that I saw this year, back in February. Dear friend Jennifer said the lines of the poppy reminded her of a Georgia O'Keefe painting, and suggested that I zoom in on the petals, crop, and play with what I saw.

Most definitely!

Georgia O'Keefe is one of my favorite artists. I love all of her phases, from her early years in New York to her later, and more familiar, years in New Mexico. Many years ago, I dropped everything to trek down to Los Angeles to see an exhibit of Ms. O'Keefe's works. Wowza!

Here's the photo that I took of the poppy. Isn't the poppy gorgeous? Maybe one day, I'll try painting a close-up of its petals with actual brush and paints.

I'm linking up with Seasons, hosted by Jeanette of St Germain's Blog, and the Creative Every Day Challenge, hosted by Leah of Creative Every Day.  I hope you'll go visit both memes.

  1. Ah, O'Keefe - love her paintings and her guts (at the time when she lived)When was doing a series of flower paintings, people kept referring to O'Keefe.
Thank you so much for linking the poppy to Seasons and love it that you introduced our memes at your blog! Glad I got to know your blog, Susie, and hope to "see" you back next week at SEASONS:)

    1. I like Georgia O'Keefe's cloud series and the paintings she did of New York the most. It took me awhile to appreciate the skulls. I especially got it when the Husband and I visited New Mexico a bunch of years ago.

  2. Those California poppies are such tough little beauties. I have't seen any flowers yet but they are up in our south-facing front garden. I think you should paint an O'Keefe-inspired poppy!

    1. I'm thinking of using some burlap to paint the poppy or maybe one of the Mama's daisies. The orange might not show up on the burlap.

  3. That's a great compliment and she's right. It does remind me of an O'Keefe painting. I love the flower and I love your artistic impression you maid with the flower. Really nice!

    1. Thanks, Birgit. Jenn kept saying to get up closer into the petals. I didn't get it until she did one herself. It opened my eyes to another view.

    1. Thanks, Eileen. Poppies are growing along our driveway now. They're kind of water beaten from the rain, but I'm sure they'll be standing up proudly by tomorrow or Friday.

  9. Very neat abstract view of the poppy. I liked them both very much. They don't bloom here until summer time.

  10. beautiful. I've tried so hard to grow California poppies in my yard but they just don't like my soggy, rain drenched soil. I am always amazed how they thrive in the wildest of conditions.

    1. Thanks, Jill. The poppies by our fence are looking sad. They must be drenched from all the rain.
