The Dude, The Husband -- and His Zzsuzzsie!

My Alphabe Thursday theme -- The Dude, The Husband

This month marks 20 years of the Husband and I knowing each other. Was it true love at first sight? I don't know. I definitely felt an electrical current running between us, and it was a cool, overcast morning in San Francisco when we met.

Our first play outing was a week later. We hiked up Mt. Tamalpais in Marin County. Hmmm, I think I mentioned this before. It sounds familiar. So, I'll just say this: We talked nonstop all the way up to the top and back down. And, we've been together ever since that day.

A Few of the Things We Had in Common When We Met
• We were widowers.
• Our first spouse was older than us.
• We each drove an old Volvo.
• We spent time in Santa Cruz during the summer when we were kids.
• We liked puns. (We still do.)

Today is the letter Z at Alphabe Thursday, which is hosted by the lovely Jenny Matlock. Please click here to check out other participants of this weekly ABC meme.

  2. Nice post, Susie, nice looking couple. I would have to seen those old Volvos. Twenty years is a long time, congratulations.
They reminded me of Peter Falk, as Columbo, and the old 1959 Peugeot 403 convertible that he drove on his TV program.
(I have a 1950 Ford Custom Deluxe Tudor and a 1974 Ford Mustang II Ghia for my old cars--I've had others.)

    1. Thanks, Jim. The Husband had a 60-ish Volvo sedan, while I had a late 70s Volvo station wagon. I liked that station wagon but was throwing $800+ a year to give it new parts, so finally retired it to a dump that took old cars for parts. He retired his a few years later when we started downsizing ourselves.

  3. Isn't love grand! You two seem to have a special kinship and I am certain many people wish they had this with their loved one or even had a loved one they could share things with. Have you walked up and down Mt. Tamalpais since then?

    1. We hiked up Mt. Tamalpais once, maybe twice, before we moved away from the area. Love is grand. Communication helps, too. And turning a "deaf" ear now and then.

  4. Ah, you dorve the same car - that does it:):) Congrats with your anniversary! Only I'm confused - I thought you lived in the UK!

    1. Thank you! UK? That would be cool. We live in California, midway, far enough away from the hustle and bustle of big cities, but close enough to go visit them.

    1. Thank you, Maggid. We have had our growls at each other. Fortunately, one of us gets levelheaded sooner than the other to start talking us both down from furiousness.

  14. Love the photo, LOVE the story. Very similar to my hubby and I although we've only known each other 7 years. Both widowed, both full-time RVers, both rode Harley-Davidson motorcycles, both from 19 year marriages with a 6 year age difference (although his wife was the older, my hubby was the older), his daughter and I both loved frogs, his daughter's fiance had the same first name AND birthday as my late husband....

    1. Very cool. When the Husband and I met, I was living on Warren Drive and Warren was his mom's family name. I think couples are meant to find each other. The thing is for each to be open about letting the other one into his/her life at the same time.

great picture, I wish you many, many more happy years together, and with The Mama...
BTW Susie, did I ever tell you that our three girls call me Mama and often The Mama, coincidence or what?

  18. How wonderful to hear your love story, especially so since you were both widowed. May you have many more years.
I miss my sister-in-law's dad and mom. They were the kindest, most gracious people. She was Polish and he was Filipino. He did the cooking for family gatherings- simply delicious. He had no recipes so we miss his cooking.
