The last of the remaining orchard in our area was pulled out last month. That's why we've been seeing and hearing a lot more crows in the neighborhood. Also, doves, pigeons, and other birds. Squirrels, too.  Fortunately, no rats or snakes. I hope all the creatures that once lived in the orchard have found good places to call home.

  2. Aw, thinking of all the birds flocking to find new shelter has "Tuppence a Bag" running through my head... *sigh*

    1. From time to time, we buy a sack of bird see and put it out for them. Unfortunate for the birds, there is a cat that lives a few houses down from us that waits for them.

  3. Is the Orchard no longer producing? Or is it just too much now? I have to love this picture-very moody with the one crow there or is it a raven?

    1. Thanks, Birgit. It's a crow. The owners stopped watering the orchard a decade ago. From what I've been told, the plan is to sell the property to developers to build a mixture of homes and apartment buildings.

    2. oh what a shame and it is probably great dirt for fruit. So much of this has happened in our area

  4. We've been dueling with a singular rat and a persistent skwerl all spring. I think we finally have the upper hand.

    1. Hope so. That would be a neat illustration -- two humans dueling a rat & sqkwerl. En garde!

  5. Susie,

I'm wondering why the orchard was pulled out. Will the trees be replanted? A few years ago, a pine tree plantation fairly near us was logged. The whole area looked so sad for a long time. Now the new trees have grown to a good size. I suppose it's just a necessary cycle but it's a pity the environment looks so devastated for so long.

    1. I wish they would replant or even farm it. Or, even build a wooded park. But, the plan is to build houses and apartment buildings.

  6. Poor critters. They've been evicted! More houses, gosh, can't we just take back our cities and redevelop all those abandoned areas?

    1. That's a great idea. Agriculture is the main industry in our county. So many new buyers will be commuters. We only have 2-lane highways in and out of our county.
