The Day I Was Born

1. In December is when I was born. "The doctor said you will be born on this day. And you were." The Mama told me, now and then, not necessarily on my birthday.

2. I was born on the Roman Catholic Church's feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, also known as Our Lady of Guadalupe.  The mother of Jesus was said to appear to a peasant named Juan Diego four times at Tepeyac, Mexico in the 16th century.

3. The same day Catholics were honoring Mary, Major Charles Yeager flew the fastest speed ever back then—about 1,650 miles per hour, a mere Mach 2.44. Shazam!

4. I was born nearly three years after Older Sister died on the same day that she was born.

5. Mama was 32 years old when she gave birth to me. Daddy was 48 years old, and Older Brother was five years old.

6. On the day I was born, Frank Sinatra and Edward G. Robinson celebrated their birthday. So did Bob Barker, Connie Francis, and Dionne Warwick. Bill Nighy turned four on the day I came out of the womb.

7. I'm a Sagittarius Water Snake.

8. A nursery rhyme says this about the day of the week I popped into the world: Saturday's child works hard for her living.

9. "Rags to Riches" by Tony Bennett was the number one on the song charts.

10. Big baby was I -- Over eight pounds and about 21 inches long. Ouch!

11. Mama had two permanent scars on her tummy, as a result of my birth.

12. Mama was fed a meal of burnt toast. There may have been other foods, but this was the part she recalled. The nurses told her burnt toast was good for her. Was it really?

13. My birth announcement was on the front page of the town newspaper. Not unusual back then. I like the spelling of our last name. The writer was pretty close.

  2. Cool recap indeed. I share my birthday with Thomas Edison and Jennifer Aniston. Here's a cool site that will tell you what words/phrases 1st appeared in print in your birthyear: https://www.merriam-webster.com/time-traveler

    1. Thanks for the link, Ron. That's a cool site! Ballpoint pen, whoopee cushion, megadeath, off-the-wall, laetrile, and RSVP were coined in my birthyear.

  3. I have heard that about burnt toast. Someone visited us once, when I was growing up, and asked for burnt toast for breakfast because it was good for you. Sounds silly to me. I liked learning about you, and always like the way you format your posts. You might like doing the Sunday questions on Sundaystealing blog, I'd like to read your answers! LeeAnna

    1. Wow, you're the first one to tell me that burnt toast is a thing. It took a bit, but I finally found something online about burnt toast is good for an upset stomach. Something to do with the charcoal. I wonder why it was so important for Mama to know this one detail about her. Lately I feel like I'm unraveling her life by examining mine. Yeah, those Sunday Questions may be helpful in my quest.

  5. I've heard that burnt toast is good for indigestion but I've never tried it :( I was born on June 2nd and my mum often said that if I'd been born a year earlier they would have got a free pram - apparently the parents of all babies born on the Queen's coronation day were given the gift of a pram. I said if she missed out she should blame my dad, not me! lol

    1. Eunice, now I know two people who know about burnt toast. Both from today's post. You're right about the indigestion. I went and did a Google search when LeeAnna said she'd heard about it.
      hahaha, that's a great story!

  6. This is some great info and it is neat what major events happened at that time. I was born in 1964 so, Beatlemania was all the rage. I am so sad to hear your mom lost a child...that must have been heartbreaking. since she was so young. I was born the year of the dragon but unsure what kind of dragon.

    1. Mama lost two babies, both girls. My younger sister was two when she died from pneumonia, I was told. Mama grieved for many years, and nobody knew that was going on. The poor woman.
Dragons are cool, Birgit. I think of the dragon being the top dog of all the animal signs because it's the only mystical one.

  7. I love to see what was happening the day I was born, the song that was the most popular. Fun list....you have much better people to share your birthday with than I do.

    1. I don't remember how I got the notion that people who have the same birthday have a look only they share. If I stretch my imagination I can almost see the resemblance among Frank, Edward, Dionne, Bob, Bill, and me.. It is hard to describe. :-)

    1. Thanks, CountryDew! On the lunar calendar, I'm a Snake, specifically a water one. Being a pragmatic, I combine both western and eastern signs. Voila, Sagittarius Snake of water.
