On the Agenda

I did everything I hoped to do in yesterday's work-in-the-yard day: Hurrah!

I have discovered that I can step over the weeds in the sidewalk cracks, while saying, "Not on my agenda." Ha!

I can walk by a rose bush and not deadhead it because it was "Not on my agenda." Ha!

The weeds alongside the side fence in the back yard were not on my agenda either, but I did put them on the Husband's.

It got him outdoors on a hot, but pleasant in the shade, day. He got a break from reading maddening and heartbreaking current events. That's a good thing. All in all, the Husband didn't mind the weeding and, before we went in for lunch, he agreed to eventually clear out all the weeds along the fence, including down the driveway. Thank you much!

While the Husband weeded I repotted our Christmas tree who we've named Mister Alton. The poor guy. He was tightly bound in his quart-size pot. It was very slow-going loosening the dirt from his roots. When he was free, I let him sit in a bucket of water, while I misted water through all his branches and gently massaged the branches apart. Doesn't Mister Alton look like he enjoyed the attention and is quite happy with his new pot? I might paint the pot the the next time I have a crazed got-to-paint-something moments.

After lunch and a movie (The Mountain Between Us with Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, who survive a plane crash and make their way down an icy mountain in winter), we went back out in the backyard. The Husband sat under the trees reading on his tablet and trying to cool down. It was nice to have his company as I turned the wheelbarrow into a succulent planter.

I didn't feel like drilling holes, opting instead to place broken pieces of a blue vase and clay pots on the wheelbarrow bed to allow for drainage. As long as the succulents aren't sitting in soggy soil, right?

Here's how the planter looks right now with various succulents lying on top of the soil. They're getting used to their new home.  I'd like some succulents to be at a higher level. Any suggestions on how to execute that?

  1. Love wheel barrow but I like older items add to yard decor.

  2. My artificial Christmas tree refuses to grow. I tried yelling at it. I tried giving it mountain dew. I tried mental therapy. Nothing is working.

    1. I know what you mean, Adam. A few weeks before we bought this guy, I let our artificial Christmas tree walk out of the yard.

  3. Use some rocks to build a 'terrace'? :) Sounds like you and the Husband had a wonderful gardening day. :)

    1. Yes, rocks! I found a couple of cool rocks in the front, too.

  4. PS. Is that a fence or an above ground pool?

    1. It's a fence, Jeanna. I wouldn't mind it being a pool though. No public swimming pool around here.

  5. Yep, I think time outdoors is far more preferable than reading about today's events. Not that we should stick our heads in the sand, but sometimes it is just too depressing for words, and that doesn't help anyone.

    1. You said it, Angie. Gardening, I've found, is one of my ways of finding zen from current events.

  6. Your garden with the flowers looks like something magical. I'm glad the Christmas tree is doing well. I have no idea how you could make one side higher but would love to see what you do and how you will paint the pot

    1. The magical touch was the Mama's. I think this photo was in April when the geraniums were smiling for the Mama's spirit. I'm hoping to get back to the wheelbarrow tomorrow.

  7. Let's just hope you don't have to repot the Christmas tree again any time soon ;)

    1. Me, too! This guy is supposed to grow to 5 to 6 feet tall. I can see him getting taller.
