Smiling Cows in the Air

Last month, while I had Gone Reading, I came across the drawing I made in first grade that started me on my path of fear of drawing, painting, and doing anything in the fine arts.

"Make the calves touch the ground," wrote First Grade Teacher. She even drew an example of a calf on the ground on my drawing. Sigh.

Many moons later, I realize that First Grade Teacher was merely doing her job to make sure I knew that cows belonged on the ground and not in air. Teacher did give me an A for the assignment after all. But, it would've been nice if she had also written something like "You have a wonderful imagination, Susie." Or, "The cows look happy in the air. How would they look standing on the ground?"

If only.

Three or four years ago, I began to embrace art. To simply draw, paint, make collages, and whatever I feel like trying. The more I do, the less time I stay in a frozen-in-fear mode at the start of a project.

Better late than never, right?

I love my first grade drawing. Today, I noticed that the cows are smiling. Giggle.

I'm linking up with Warm Heart Wednesday and Creative Every Day. I hope you check out some of the other participants at both memes.

  1. The teacher had no imagination since cows can fly! I love your drawing and I am glad you are escaping that barrier and expressing yourself through art also.

    1. LOL. Cows fly all over our county. Oooh, that would be a fun picture. I did like First Grade Teacher regardless of her comment.

  2. Love the picture, it's very sweet. I think the cow at the back looks a bit grumpy but the other two look happy enough :)

    1. Thanks. The cow in the back probably wants to fly, too.

    1. :-) First Grade Teacher did teach me a lot of other good stuff, for which I'm thankful. She nurtured my love of reading, and taught me not to laugh at people because I think they talk, act, or look funny.

  4. Oh, how i love this - anyone handing a work of art to me, gets LOTS of PRAISE . . AND - YOU have made your life a True Work of Art . . . (lots of people - including me - are mighty glad you share yourself. You are a Gift!)

  6. Why not flying cows ?? Modern Art is not so good as your drawing ! I could see without any doubt that there were cows, which is not always the case in Picasso paintings, there you have your head where the foot should be or nearly !

    1. I wonder what First Grade Teacher would've said if I had drawn Picasso cows. LOL!

  7. You should frame that!! I misplaced many of my pen and ink drawings in our move, and while searching for them, I found artwork that my son Joey had done when he was in school. I plan to give it to him. Thanks for the comment on my post!

    1. Thanks, Susan. I remember having a difficult time learning to print fat o's, a's, and whatever else needed to be fat.

  11. I love the cows! It's a shame the teacher discouraged your young heart.

  12. Flying cows are wonderful things! And horses and unicorns and all manners of earth bound life would feel lucky to not touch the ground.

I absolutely adore this link to week 16.

I am going to be smiling about this for the rest of the day.

    Fly, cows, fly!
