Teaser Tuesday: Bones of the Barbary Coast

I'm still not reading books for fun regularly like I did before there were blogs, but at least I'm getting back into it. Last night, I finished Craig Ferguson's autobiography and picked up my latest to read from my pile of books yet to read. Really, I shouldn't even be thinking of buying new books or browsing for books at the library. But, I am.

Since I have new book, I'm participating in the weekly book meme called Teaser Tuesday. Basically, you open the book at random and choose two sentences (though some bloggers choose more) to quote. The objective: To provide enough of a tease that others may be interested in reading the book, too.  So, after reading my offering, come join me at Teaser Tuesday to discover possible future reads.

"Bart was right to warn her it wouldn't be easy. The mayhem, the turbulence, the mushrooming growth, the scope and pervasiveness of underworld activity, topped off by the massive disruption of the earthquake and fire: It seemed impossible that they'd ever discover who the wolfman was."

  4. The "wolfman"?!

Oh, and how was "American on Purpose"? I used to watch Ferguson on a regular basis, but got out of the habit when I started going to bed before midnight. ;)

  6. Bookish Snob, Sarah, E.J., and Yvonne: I confess. I didn't like my first random choice. So different from this one in that it gave no sense of anything about the story. :-)

Lori and Alice Audrey, I so agree. What a second sentence! This author's style of writing is different from anything I've been reading lately.

smellincoffee, yep the wolfman. It's the unofficial name that forensic anthropologists have given a set of human bones dating from the 1905 SF earthquake....All in all, "American on Purpose" was interesting. I like that there was not much name dropping.

  7. Alayne, I'd be interested to read your impressions of this book, should you read it. I'm only starting to get into the rhythm of the author's voice.

  9. Wow, there's a lot going on there! Wherever this place is, it sounds a little too violent for me! Great teaser, though.

  10. Good teaser, Su-sieee!

Regarding your comment on my post, Madelyn Alt's "witchy" books. They're not scary at all, so you might like them. They're marketed as chick-lit mystery, so while there may be murder and mayhem, there's also a lot of laughs and sarcasm. Thanks for visiting!

  13. Lu, thanks! And, welcome to my blog. Hope you enjoy it.

jlshall, I'm only a few chapters into the book. Still getting set up. I'm not into violence so I hope there won't be any graphic stuff. The main character is a psychic P.I. who does serious historical research. So, we'll see.

Heather, thanks. I'll check out Alt's books, then.

Precious and Namine, thanks and you're quite welcome. :-)
