Through a Depot Hack Darkly

Through a Depot Hack Darkly?

Remember the phrase through a glass darkly?  There you go.

What's a depot hack?

In this instance, a 1925 Ford Model depot hack. That's the handsome mechanical creature through which I took the above picture.  By the way, my objective was to take a photo of the spires of the Methodist church, which is several years older than the vehicle, through the depot hack's window. The reflection of clouds and another 100+ year old building was an added plus.

Okay, back to the depot hack. The owner told us that a hack, which body resembles a wagon, was a taxicab and a hack that served passengers at train depots was known as a depot hack. When train depots became known as train stations, the depot hacks eventually went by the name of station wagons.

Ohhh!

Yup, the Husband's and my mouths dropped in wonder, too. I bet this particular depot hack's owner waits for that moment every time he tells the story. No doubt he has told it a lot.

Here's the 103 year old depot hack. It reminded me of the movie Summer Magic with Haley Mills and Burl Ives.

  1. Wow...I had to read this a few times to try to get it into my head. I’m still unsure if I did or not. I love the old station wagon and I love the new look since I have been horrible...again. Time to look at some older posts

    1. At first I thought hack referred to a computer hack, but in this case it''s short for hackney, which was a horse-drawn carriage for hire. (Now i wonder how the hack in computer hack came to be.) If you're horrible, Birgit, then so am I. ;-)

  2. It took me a bit to get the connection. I'll blame my lack of uptake on the migraine.

Cool car. And Summer Magic... That was just on the other day (well, it's been more than a month) wasn't it?

    1. I could've written in more clearly. :-) I like Summer Magic so much, I bought the DVD a while back. Michael Pollard was a hoot as Digby Popham. My favorite line is when he was asked if he had any brothers and sisters and he said that he was an only child except for his sister.

  3. OK - once again my literal brain has let me down - I did not notice the reflection of the building and the clouds until you pointed it out … sigh. And OMG - that's how the term station wagon came to be? Love it!

    1. I didn't see the reflection until I was "processing" the photo in Photoshop. I love surprises.

  5. Heh! Who knew!

We get to see vintage cars on a regular-ish basis. There's a small 'speedway' type racetrack on the other side of town and antique and a 50's-and 60's car enthusiasts regularly hold rallys there, especially in summer. :D

    1. Every year, there seems to be another one or two new vintage car shows happening in our area. My dream is to own a 1950s Chevrolet truck like the one the Daddy had when I was a kid. Maybe when I become a millionaire.

    1. The clouds in the reflection were above the low mountains to the east. :-) Cheers, Kelleyn!
