Pulitzer Prize for Criticism

I learned recently that the Pulitzer people give out an annual prize for criticism. The mama would win one if she was a journalist, or if the prize was for the most, best, and consistent criticizer around.  That doesn't sound good, does it?

On a positive note, she is less critical than she was in our younger days. That could be because I am just as less critical about her. Ah, the joys of this daughter-and-mother relationship. I digress, as bloggers are sometimes meant to do.

According to the Pulitzer Prizes Web site, the winners in the criticism category are awarded for their " distinguished criticism." In other words, they have written in print or online acclaimed, celebrated, esteemed, respected, important, and influential words of assessment, appraisal, judgement, disapproval, condemnation, and/or censure. Imagine.

Some winning critics have offered their opinions about movies, books, music, art, architecture, or media. Others have commented about social, cultural, economic, political issues. They utter their criticisms in many engaging ways that influence the populace, whether they intended to or not. Myself, I like the ones who express themselves humorously.  The prize for being considered the best critic of the year is $10,000. The mama would love that.

  1. When I was in college I majored in Art History. I was supposed to go around to Los Angeles galleries and critique the shows. What do you say about a room full of tires? This was in 1969! Anyway, I know what you mean about getting reverse critical acclaim from the Mom. I really wanted to get A-s so I didn't use her list of profundities. I went instead to the Art Review magazines and got my lists of descriptive adjectives there. From your 'diletante faux-bohemian' friend.

  2. Hey diletante faux-bohemian friend! Mamas are something aren't they. I like to think that in a parallel universe, I'm driving my five children batty with my craziness. Hopefully, I am not too critical. But, I am the mama's daughter.
